A new year’s miracle: 15-year-old Daryna safely returned to Ukraine

On New Year’s Eve, a true miracle unfolded: 15-year-old Daryna* returned from Russian-occupied territory and was finally reunited with her father. This rescue mission was one of the most complex yet, requiring over nine months of careful planning by our partners. The successful return was part of the President’s Bring Kids Back UA initiative, made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Ukrainian Child Rights Network.

When Russia’s full-scale invasion began, Daryna was temporarily staying with her uncle’s family in southern Ukraine. Within weeks, the village fell under occupation, leaving her trapped and unable to return to her family in Ukrainian-controlled territory. Tragically, her stay with her uncle’s family became a nightmare — she endured physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her uncle’s partner, who threatened to send her to a Russian orphanage.

Daryna’s mother made countless efforts to bring her daughter home, but her attempts were obstructed by the occupying forces. After prolonged negotiations, the uncle’s family finally allowed Daryna to move in with her father. On the final day of the year, Daryna’s greatest wish was fulfilled — she is now safe, at home, in her father’s embrace.

Thousands of Ukrainian children remain stranded in occupied territories or in enemy hands, separated from their families. We will not rest until every child is safely returned home to Ukraine.
